Its great to see the sun lately, I feel it has been hiding away for way to long. Its funny how it can make you feel all the more motivated to get out and do things. Do you think the same way?
This week the students are starting a booklet that they can take home to read once they are finished. It is about the clothes we find in our closet. They are using their dictionaries to help them fill in the sentences.
They are learning how to pick out rhyming words this week. We are going to play some fun games with rhymes as well and the students will learn about to make rhyming patterns, sentences themselves.
Math the students are learning how to pick out important information or key words in story problems. Some of the words they are learning are: enleve (take away), ajoute (to add), en tout (in total), reste (left) plus, moins (less). We are also counting to 100 and starting to count by 2 up to 100. Feel free to practice this with your child at home. You can print off a 100 frame and have them color in the numbers counting by 2,5 and 10. We are also learning double additions and doubles plus one. They should be able to add doubles up to 10.
In health, this week we are going to do a project on what is healthy for our teeth and what is not. Students will take flyers and cut out that they think is good and bad for their teeth.
In social studies this week students are learning to identify the different flags for each Canadian province. We are also taking a look at what makes Canada unique compared to the rest of the world as well as the province of Alberta.
in science this week we are going to learn about braille and sign language. I will be showing the students a video clip about Helen Keller. They have a lot of questions about those who may be deaf and blind and how do they learn about the world around them. What better person to show them than Helen Keller.
English we are reviewing the weekly sight words and starting to write repetitive sentences. They also continue to work on their Explode the code book. I may send a few home seeing that some students are a little farther behind. So look for those.
I plan on starting guided reading in French this week as well. I am so happy to start with them and I think they are eager too.
We also have started a fun activity in class, not sure if they mentioned it to you but you can ask them about it now that you know. Every morning after announcements we start our day off with a quote from Mother Teresa. We discuss what they think it means and how they can apply it to their everyday life. Its great to hear some of their answers and to even see them put forth an effort to do what the quote suggests. So far here are a couple of quotes we talked about in class.
"Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love"
"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier"
"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples"( they had the absolute best answers for this one!!)
"If you judge people, you have no time to love them"
"Do not wait for leaders, do it alone, person to person"This was todays quote. I encourage you to ask them about it. Some of them really understood what this meant to them!
Important things to remember this week:
